Mute Swans Vancouver

2002 Nesting Log - April 12 to 14

April 12: Dramatic developments at site "B". After weeks of activity on the island near last years site, the "B" pair have moved off the island and laid one egg. The new site is about 30 metres from last year's site. The (new) nest is very small - it was not there two days ago. Like previous years the nest is very close to the path. The photos below show the new location (old, island, location in top left of first photo). The second photo shows one of the swans returning to the nest (egg at bottom right). The final photo shows the egg in the nest...

There were also developments at the "A" site. Because of its location it is difficult to see inside the nest, but the photos below indicate some interesting developments. The photo at left shows the pen standing in the nest with the cob in the foreground. Just visible in that photo at the right is an egg. It must have rolled out of the nest at some point. Also visible (in the second photo) is another egg - under the pen in the nest. The third image shows the "lost" egg outside the nest. So, we know for sure that this pen has laid at least two eggs (possibly more)...

April 13: Not a lot new today. Here are some photos of the "D" pair courting. Note how they fluff up their necks - unlike the threat posture only the top of the neck is "fluffed"...

April 14: A second egg for the "B" pair. Normally Mute Swans lay an egg every 36-48 hours, to a maximum of 5 to 7. The photos below show the pen standing on the grass the other side of the path near her nest and the two eggs in the nest. Note the pinkish colour of the pen's feet - like her sister, the "A" pen, she is also "Polish"...

The events at the "A" nest site today were more dramatic, though of a less pleasant nature - see next page.
